Chirrupers would often accost musicians and performers heading to music halls, and would blackmail them. For a fee they’d quite happily give much enthusiastic response to the act, clapping and cheering. However if they didn’t pay up? They’d hoot, whistle, hiss and generally heckle and disrupt the whole performance. Many artistes would pay such a blackmail, if only to evade the discontent of the rest of the audience at the Chirrupers disruptions if they didn’t.
